In the rural part of India, the day starts very early awakened by the alarm ,set by the roosters at around 5:00AM. The cows are milked by older kids or parents. After the cows are milked they wait for the milk man, who comes in a bicycle, buys the milk from farmer then sells it to a dairy factory in a nearby town. Some houses also collect eggs, others sell chicken for food . Younger family members go to a borewell and get water, most houses don't have running water. The house has to be cleaned . The outside part of the house is washed and decorated with a beautiful rangoli.

Early in the morning the cowherd takes the cows and goats to a nearby mountain or pasture for grazing. Goats are sold for meat or sacrificed on certain festivals. Sometimes a wealthy farmer can have a hundred goats.

Now it is time for school. Kids comb their hair and the girls braid their hair with flowers. They grab their backpacks after doing any unfinished work. It is usually a long walk to to their one room school with friends and a few games on the way.

They trick their neighbors, like taking a mango or guava on the way. In School, the teachers start the day with prayer and devotional songs. The next thing done is usually reading tables, most know the tables before addition or subtraction. After this, the class breaks off. After a while it is lunch time. The government provides meals, it is the only good meal in the day for some. Lunch passes and on with studies and reading again. After school the boys play cricket, marbles and kabadi. With girls, it is hopscotch, blindfolding game, and hide and seek.

While the kids are at school there is plenty of work to do. The farm needs to be plowed, irrigated, and sometimes be harvested. There are new plants to be planted and dead plants need to be removed. There is also a lot of cooking especially near holidays like Deepawali, Ugadhi, Shankranti, and Ganesha festivals but every day there is something that needs to be cooked or washed. The house has to be sweeped, there are dishes to wash or cows and chicken who need feeding. you can never be bored with all the things to do.

At dusk the villagers eat dinner and go outside. They sit outside talking, with no city noises or lights. There are no street lights ,so you can see a sky full of stars. The houses don't have any heaters,so on cold nights they gather up and build a bonfire to warm themselves.

From my experiences in the village I know how much fun it can be. When I go there ,I go to this Banyan tree and swing from its vines. I love trying to catch a chick or pet a calf when it is away from its mother. I also love going with the other kids to pluck guavas. On the trees sometimes I find a bird nest or a bee hive. Every time I go there I must pet a stray dog, I get yelled at all the time but I can't resist.

Village life is full of ups and downs. There is always work to do but unlike in America you have friends everywhere, you can always go to a friends house or walk over to a neighbors place. These are a few of the things villagers experience in India on a daily basis.
